    Here is how hypothetical counterfeit zcash:native could exist in circulation right now. Although, the patch stopped new fakes, but the uncertainty about the past remains until Ironwood is live(July) How they could enter and stay in circulation. > An attacker could hold forged notes privately inside Orchard. > They could send them to other Orchard users via normal shielded transactions, recipients receive them as regular ZEC with no way to detect they are fake. The only hard limit was the turnstile. You cannot withdraw more ZEC from Orchard to transparent addresses or exchanges than legitimately entered but inside Orchard, forged and real coins circulate freely and are indistinguishable. Any fake ZEC created before the June 2 patch behaves exactly like real ZEC inside the pool. Why this creates uncertainty when you buy today > If someone exploited this years ago and moved fakes around inside Orchard, those coins could be mixed into the shielded liquidity you interact with now. > When you buy ZEC on an exchange or receive it, you are getting coins the network currently treats as valid, but a portion of the Orchard supply might include those hidden extras. There is no cryptographic way to audit the interior of the old Orchard pool and prove zero fakes exist. That is the core problem the disclosure highlighted. That is also the specific problem Ironwood is built to close.

    🚨🚨Why did zcash:native drop ~40% today? A serious bug was publicly revealed today in Zcash’s Orchard (its main private/shielded transaction system, live since 2022). What the bug actually means: 1. It could have let someone create fake zcash:native out of thin air inside the private pool or 2. Double-spend (spend the same money twice) without anyone detecting it. 3. Basically, the system might have accepted invalid/fake transactions as real. This is called a “soundness bug”, the security check that should reject bad transactions failed in a sneaky way. Although, no funds were lost. Total ZEC supply (21 million cap) stayed protected but because everything is private, they can’t 100% prove it was never used. Why the big drop today? > The full details came out publicly today. > Markets panicked over the “what if it was exploited?” uncertainty. > Privacy coins depend heavily on trust in their math. Even with a fast fix, confidence took a hit. Team is now working on better ways to prove the private po
