🤖 Arbitrum warns about hidden risk in AI: users cannot verify which model runs on the GPU Arbitrum and Offchain Labs have published a technical paper proposing a new method to verify AI inferences quickly and reliably. The study, titled Towards Verifiable AI with Lightweight Cryptographic Proofs of Inference, reduces verification time from several minutes to just milliseconds. What problem it addresses AI providers have economic incentives to use smaller, compressed, or quantized models while charging as if they were running more advanced versions. Currently, users cannot easily verify which model is being run, creating a critical trust gap for regulated industries, model governance, and autonomous agent ecosystems. Proposed solution by Offchain Labs Instead of re‑executing the entire inference, the system uses random sampling of internal model paths. The server commits via a cryptographic fingerprint of the weights and internal states used during execution. The client randomly selects a path to verify only a portion of the computation. If the provider ran a model different from the promised one, the proof fails. This approach drastically reduces computational cost and enables near‑instant verification. Connection with Arbitrum The mechanism builds on the dispute‑resolution logic used by Arbitrum One and optimistic rollups. Rather than verifying the entire computation, only the disputed part is sampled and resolved through a bisection process, achieving high scalability. Summary Arbitrum and Offchain Labs propose a lightweight verification system that confirms in milliseconds whether an AI model is running as promised.
